If there is one adjective that correctly describes QCR rockets is “unusual”. In the case of glider rockets, QCR has an unusually large variety, unusual designs and, considering the quality of materials, unusually low price.
The Easy Slide IV is a case in point. This an rocket glider (RG) that uses two engines in an over-and-under cluster to propel itself to unheard of altitudes! The bottom engine mount is for an 18mm motor and the top one is for a 13mm motor. When fired together, the total impulse class can be D (or higher, if you're brave!).
Rocket gliders (RG’s) are one of the most intriguing and complex classes of rockets. The general idea is for them to fly upwards like a regular rocket but to glide back down like a plane. Sounds simple, right? The catch is that this transition from rocket to glider must be done without separating the model into different components. If the rocket separates into components (e.g., booster pod and glider), it is called a “boost glider” (BG).
As a consequence of this “unity in flight” requirement for RG’s, there must be some change in the aerodynamic structure of the model that permits the transition from rocket to glider. In the Easy Slide family of rockets, QCR has chosen to effect this change in structure through the use of a sliding wing concept. In the powered and coasting stages, the wing of the rocket is tied back against the rear horizontal stabilizer. The RG thus flies as any regular rocket would. At ejection, the hot gases cause the wing to be freed from its attachment point. The wing then moves to its “normal” position, causing the rocket to glide.
QCR rockets are performance-oriented. They are a common sight at NARAM year after year. I have built several models myself, so I can vouch for the quality of materials and research-based design. But don’t take my word for it. Check out the NARTS papers on optimality. You’ll see that these rockets are right on cue!
